Wild Horses of the Camargue

23rd – 26th October 2014
with Simon Weir

Imagine the dreamlike atmosphere of a herd of wild white horses as they thunder – manes flashing, water splashing – across the shallow marshlands of the Camargue where, for centuries, possibly thousands of years, the Camargue horses have lived wild developing the stamina, hardiness and agility that they are known for today and which can be witnessed in the spectacular and romantic wild gallops seen only in this region of France.

On this 4-day fully escorted workshop, you will have a chance to capture every nuance of the action, behaviour and form of these noble animals, as we concentrates on photographing them during the best light of day, with the goal of creating images that depict their wild, untamed life. You will also have time to photograph the gardians - Camargue cowboys – at work, as they wrangle the horses across the marshes and salt lakes that form the landscape of this unique region.

Our local guides have spent many years in the region, working with the gardians and the horses, and I work with them exclusively. Also, to help you in your photography, our professional photographic guide Simon Weir has a wealth of experience working with the Camargue horses and will be on hand to provide tuition for both the exhilarating action shots and the more subtle portrait opportunities and serene ‘horses in the landscape’ compositions.

The Camargue is also renowned for its birdlife and you are likely to see many species during your time with us. And after the horses, you may spend the evenings wandering the narrow streets of the ancient, medieval town of Aigues-Mortes, which is full of its own photographic splendour.

  • Five full sessions with the horses in varying locations
  • Photograph combative stallions
