The lush, ecologically-diverse island of Hawai’i is the youngest and largest island in the Hawai’ian chain, hence its nickname “Big Island”. You can travel through all but four of the world’s different climate zones here, ranging from wet tropical to polar tundra, which is a result of the shielding effect and elevations of the two massive volcanoes Maunakea and Maunaloa. From the many geological features visible at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park to the snow-capped heights of Maunakea and the lush valleys of the Hilo and Hamakua coasts, the island of Hawai’i is an unrivalled expression of the power of nature. It is also home to a wealth of marine wildlife, with wild dolphins and manta rays swimming and frolicking in the warm ocean waters, to turtles hauling out to nest on the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach.

Day 1: Kona - West coast
On your arrival into Kona, we transfer to our hotel. In the afternoon, we visit the western coastline of the island, culminating in sunset photography at famed Anaeho’Omalu Bay.
Day 2: South island and turtles
This morning we head to the southern part of the island to photograph turtles on the famous black-sand beaches. After an afternoon exploring lava tubes and coastal landscapes, we head to the summit of Maunakea for an evening of astro photography.
Day 3: East island and dolphins
An early start sees us swimming and snorkelling with wild dolphins. In the afternoon we take a private boat tour to view lava flowing into the Pacific Ocean. And the excitement of the day continues into evening, as we view manta rays off the eastern coast.
Days 4 - 5: Waterfalls and rainforest
For the next two days, we explore the island photographing waterfalls, rainforests and lush landscape inland and around the coast.
Day 6: Kona
We transfer to Kona Airport in time for your connecting flight home.
Hawai’i isn’t the most obvious destination for a wildlife photo safari so be prepared to be surprised. Wild dolphins, turtles and majestic manta rays intersperce with lush tropical forests, volcanoes and giant waterfalls to provide the most thrilling photographic adventure.
What to expect on this safari
Coast, landscapes and sunsets
Kailua Kona is located where the western slopes of the Hualālai volcano meet the ocean. North of the city were the weather gets dryer, you can find gorgeous beaches and coastal landscapes. South of Kona are excellent snorkelling spots. The climate here is more humid and perfect for lush forests and for growing the world-famous Kona coffee.
Black sand beach and coastal landscape
Punalu’u beach is the most famous black sand beach in Hawai’i. Another reason for its popularity is the opportunity to photograph endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles basking in the sun on the beach.
Dolphins, manta rays and marine life
Famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau claimed no aquarium, however spacious it may be, can duplicate the conditions of the ocean. This becomes abundantly clear for visitors who venture out for a day on the water looking for, and swimming with, wild dolphins and manta rays. The Big Island offers ample opportunity to get up close and personal with these intelligent, magnificent creatures.
Lava viewing is a must-do activity for your vacation if you are lucky enough to be on the Big Island while one of the volcanoes is actively erupting. Hawaii wouldn’t exist if it were not for the continuous volcanic activity that created all the islands in the state and seeing this happening in “real-time” is for many people a once in a lifetime experience.
Waterfalls and rainforest
Home to gorgeous valleys, exotic plants, waterfalls, and the heart of ancient Hawai’ian folklore, the Big Island’s Hamakua coast is a breathtaking adventure waiting to happen. A 40-mile stretch of natural wonder that spans the distance between Hilo and Waipi’o Valley, the Hamakua Ccoast offers more opportunities to pull off the road and find an incredible sight than anywhere else in Hawai’i, but no other spectacle can match up to the Big Island waterfalls.
View the amazing sunset and stars on the top of Mauna Kea, the tallest oceanic mountain in the world. You’ll see the largest, most powerful observatories in the world as you stargaze across Hawai’i’s beautiful and unique night sky.

1. Participant Information
1.1 The participant is required to complete a Traveler’s Information Form and sign it. This form must be completed and signed within 14 days of receipt. The participation of the participant on any photo safari or workshop will be declined in the absence of the signed documents, with no refund given.
1.2 The participant is responsible for providing correct information regarding personal details. CHRIS WESTON will not be responsible for costs incurred due to incorrect, incomplete or inaccurate information.
2. Deposits and payments
2.1 A non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a place for the participant on a CHRIS WESTON photo safari/workshop. Deposit payments may be made by bank transfer or by credit or debit card through Paypal. All payment processing fees, including but not limited to PayPal fees and bank transfer fees, have to be paid by the participant.
2.2 Where a deposit has been paid to secure a booking, the balance of the photo safari/workshop fee is due no less than 90-days prior to the commencement of the event. Payments may be made by bank transfer or by credit or debit card through Paypal. All payment processing fees, including but not limited to PayPal fees and bank transfer fees, have to be paid by the participant. Should this final payment fail to reach CHRIS WESTON or its agent by the date specified then CHRIS WESTON reserves the right to treat the booking as cancelled and retain the deposit.
3. Cancellation and refunds
3.1 CHRIS WESTON must receive written notice of the participant’s cancellation at which time the following cancellation fees are payable:

– 120 days or fewer before the photo safari starts (workshops 90 days) starts: 100% of total fee.
3.1.1 No partial refunds are made for unused services or portions of a photo safari/workshop for any reason whatsoever. Photo safaris/workshops are sold as a package only. This policy also applies to photo safari extensions. Cancellation fees are not transferable.
3.2 CHRIS WESTON reserves the right to change the price of, alter or cancel any photo safari/workshop prior to the scheduled departure date for any reason whatsoever. Should a change in price become necessary, the participant will then have the choice of accepting the change, transferring to an alternative photo safari/workshop (and where this is of a lower price CHRIS WESTON will refund the difference) or withdrawing from the contract and accepting a refund of all monies paid to CHRIS WESTON. CHRIS WESTON is not responsible for any expenses incurred by the participant relating to this clause.
3.2.1 Where an alteration is necessary and the alteration constitutes a substantial change to the photo safari/workshop described in the Information Pack then the participant will then have the choice of accepting the alteration, transferring to an alternative photo safari/workshop (and where this is of a lower price CHRIS WESTON will refund the difference) or withdrawing from the contract and accepting a refund of all monies paid to CHRIS WESTON. CHRIS WESTON is not responsible for any expenses incurred by the participant relating to this clause.
3.3 CHRIS WESTON reserves the right to make any changes it deems necessary to the itinerary or to substitute hotels, modes of transport, vessels, or guides to those mentioned in the literature.

For this reason the itinerary and photo safari /workshop description must be taken as an indication of what may take place on the photo safari/workshop and not as a contractual obligation on the part of CHRIS WESTON.
