The Great Migration

Feel the thunder of one hundred thousand hooves

The Ngorongoro Crater and surrounding highlands form one of Africa’s most beautiful and bountiful regions. It is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, home to the highest density of big game in Africa and the best place in Tanzania to see the Big Five.

Because the wildlife stays within the confines of the crater, it’s a perfect year-round location, guaranteed to deliver great photography. There’s a healthy population of black rhinoceroses and some of the largest “Tusker” elephants remaining in Africa. It’s also home to good populations of lions, leopards and cheetah, and lions’ eternal enemy – hyenas. There are healthy herds of wildebeest, buffalo, gazelle and zebra. It’s also a prime location to photograph beautiful flamingos set against shimmering blue salt pans.

The Serengeti is world famous and one of Africa’s most captivating safari destinations. In late summer and throughout autumn it is centre stage for one of nature’s most incredible spectacles – the Great Migration. Two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelle march north, following the rain, towards the mighty Mara river, on the Serengeti’s northern border. As the animals hesitate and ponder, giant crocodiles form a gauntlet and lions, leopards and cheetah lie in wait. Watching it all … is you. Camera ready to capture stunning images.

The Great Migration – Northern Serengeti

It is, perhaps, nature’s greatest spectacle – around 2-million wildebeests, zebras and gazelle thundering there way north towards Kenya, following the rains, in search of fresh grass on which to graze. To reach their destination the animals need to cross the mighty Mara River and it’s here they face their greatest obstacle. Watching the dynamic play out is an experience in itself – zebras direct the show, finding safety in the overwhelming numbers of wildebeest.  It’s a game of cat and mouse. The wildebeests, seemingly, are willing participants. And then, when one goes, they all go, committed to survival. Giant Nile crocodiles wait, jaws snapping. In the tall grasses, lions, leopards and cheetah wait. It is one of life’s great journeys and an experience to behold.

Ngorongoro Crater

Three million years ago, there slumbered a massive supervolcano in what we now call northern Tanzania. The mountain stood higher and mightier than nearby Mount Kilimanjaro. Its summit scraped the ceiling of Africa and its slopes were so vast they directed their own weather patterns and water flow. For millennia the mountain slept. Then it woke up. Then it fell down and now it’s teaming with life, as diverse as it is abundant. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most famous photography destinations, it’s teeming wildlife making for spectacular images and experiences.

Is This Adventure For You?

This safari is perfect for anyone with an interest in observing and photographing wildlife. If you are not a photographer but enjoy being out in nature and don’t mind being patient with the photographers, who may want to spend lengthy time with a specific subject, then that’s okay too. We’ll be heading off the beaten track and into the bush, so you do need an adventurous spirit. Typically, we attract an international clientele of all age groups. There is very little walking involved during this safari and so there are no specific fitness requirements. Early starts are the norm, however!

1 dayKilimanjaro Airport - Ngorongoro Crater

4 dayInto the Serengeti

We leave Ngorongoro and head into Serengeti National Park. As we make our way north, there are plenty of photographic opportunities along the way as the remnants of the 2-million wildebeests, zebras and gazelles continue to follow the rains, with the big predators in hot pursuit. We overnight in central Serengeti. (B/L/D)

5-7 daysSerengeti National Park

For the next three days, we concentrate our activity along the banks of the Mara river, watching and waiting as the wildebeest and zebra choose their crossing point. In between, we’ll see predators and other big game, making this a spectacular photography experience. (B/L/D)
